I have read most everything about the CSS Alabama, so I was excited to find this for free. Semmes is a great writer and it is a very enjoyable and fascinating read. Be advised it is long. Also, Semmes has a tendency to expound in great detail on nautical phenomenon and events and it can be a bit much. You may want to skim. Also, Semmes was a lawyer and a hard loser. The first several chapters are basically a brief on the legality of the Confederate cause. It is not really terribly infected with lost cause tropes, compared to other memoirs, but it is a very bitter work in some places. As I said, a hard loser. For all that, it is a stirring memoir by one of the greatest naval captains in history. Not too mention rollicking good fun at its best parts.

Memoirs of Service Afloat During the War Between the States Raphael 18091877 Semmes Making of America Project 9781371450656 Books Reviews

A little bias here as it was written by my great great grandfather.
An equally interesting book by Raphael Semmes is Service Afloat and Ashore during the Mexican War. He served as captain of the USS Somers (Billy Budd inspiration due to incident before Semmes's command), and as an aide to General Worth during the taking of Mexico City. Book includes much Mexican history... to time of Incas.
He was my (2) great- grandfather and I've read all of his writings as well as the numerous biographies written on him. I'm biased, but hearing the story in his voice provides a depth of understanding that even the better books written about his life and service lack. His defense of the Southern Cause is amongst them most cogent ever written, especially due to his background and lack of personal interest in the institution of slavery.
Admiral Semmes gives a wonderful account of his voyage, and provides a welcome relief to the revisionist history being forced on us today about the Civil War. I would consider it a must read for the civil war buff. If you believe the civil war was about slavery you are likely to be offended or who knows you might become enlightened.
This is an extremely well written and fascinating memoir. Semmes was obviously a very intelligent man with a strong interest in the sciences, particularly meteorology and oceanography. Of course, as a ship's captain, he had need to understand these sciences. His descriptions are vivid and his experiences afloat in the service of the Confederacy are enthralling. He also cuts clearly through the myth of the history of the union concerning the war and clearly shows for what the Confederacy stood and the issues of conflict between the two sides. The book is highly recommended to both those interested in the War for Southern Independence and those who just want to read an excellent historical adventure.
Interesting, in particular the comments concerning the economic cause of the Civil War from the Confederate perspective.
It was an interesting, but long read, from the point of view of a Confederate ship captain. The book alternates among the history of a southern ship stopping and sinking northern ships, rants against the north for trying to keep states from seceding, and scientific explanations for winds and currents. The author had a great vocabulary; I'm glad I read it on the so I had quick access to a dictionary.
The book itself was a good binding , and the type font was was not too small or the spacing too cramped .

This book , gratifyingly , is really two books in one. One part of the book is a high seas action -adventure story reminiscent of pirates ( his ships were commerce raiders ) , except the story is true , and written by a career naval officer who knew his business.

Rafael Semmes , in addition to being a career naval officer , was also a lawyer , and the second book is an eloquent and articulate explanation of the reasons for secession , and why a person would give up a 20+ year career in the U.S. Navy and throw in his lot with the Confederate States of America.

If you want to believe that all Confederates were racist Neanderthals , and you don't want to hear incisive criticism of the United States by an intelligent critic , then you will probably dislike this book.

Otherwise , Rafael Semmes was a very intelligent , competent , and perceptive man , and his book reflects that. It is one of the most readable memoirs I have come across.
